How often is it that we see bearded outwardly practicing religious Muslims as protagonists in film rather than as evil violent fanatical antagonists? Can we culturally engineer popular entertainment in which Muslims are seen as the protagonists? Kids, growing up, idealize Batman, Superman, Captain America, Hulk, Spiderman and Ironman, and as a result, view the 'heroes' of today as people who fit that archetype, i.e unislamic, clean-shaven, angry, dominant, buff, hard, independent, powerful, rich, aggressive, engaging in illicit relationships with women outside of marriage, not taking no for an answer, and generally violently enforce justice. Often, we are influenced/brainwashed to the point that we believe that the hardest, most aggressive, most relentless, and manliest of men are those in American prisons. With the American declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the world thunders and roars, with no bite. People deceive themselves thinking they are actually accomplishing something from the safety of their screens with supportive Facebook picture filters or angry tweets, and sadly enough, for most people, that’s representative of how much as they care about this issue. Nearly all governments, shared their version of angry tweet s and Facebook statuses; the most aggressive of which, Turkey, ‘threatened to break ties with Israel’ (after they were the first Muslim country to recognize Israel). Global outrage stirred at the decision, but the reality is that not much changed; the decision was symbolic more than anything else. Lets talk a bit about Zionism: The age of empires was on the decline and the Western (now internationally celebrated) conception of the nation-state was on the rise in the early 1900s. Therefore, Israel's spiritual founder who was a secular (almost atheist) German speaking playwright of Jewish ancestry, Theodor Herzl was likely inspired by this newfound western conception of nationalism. He saw other nations' celebration the formation of their respective nation-states (a culture that has a land) from the dissolution of empires, and thought to himself, after witnessing racial discrimination in France, that the Jews should similarly have a land for their nation too. These days, I have been studying male-female relationship dynamics from an anthropological perspective and came across this one idea that I felt was worth sharing. As women continue their education without looking for marriage, two things happen: they get older and their standards increase. As a result, the husbands the women want are at the woman's socioeconomic level or above, so as you move up the ladder, you are not satisfied with a partner who is below you on the ladder. This is a manifestation of a female mating strategy known as hypergamy which involves the female being attracted to a male with higher education, wealth, status, strength, etc. than herself in order to protect herself and her offspring (see link below) and want to be 'led' from this perspective.
