The Argument From Design: Its Issues and the Issues with the Issues

Introducing the Argument from Design: Suppose you are in the desert and you find a watch on the ground. Immediately you know, a posteriori, that the watch, with its evident complexity, had a designer. Analogously, the universe and the life within it is more intricate than the watch. Therefore, the best explanation for its intricacy is an intelligent designer (some call this God). This is William Paley’s version of the argument from design (Tennant). Criticisms and Attacks on the Argument from Design from Naturalism. The contemporary naturalist criticizes the argument from design because the naturalists have a better theory to explain the appearance of design in nature. This ‘better’ theory is the New Synthesis: the classical Darwinian model fused with modern genetics. This theory shows how apparent ‘design’ in living organisms could have arisen blindly, through mutations and natural selection, without the need for a sentient d esigner . If this is true, Paley’s w atchmaker w...

Realism: Truth Doesn’t Care About Your Feelings

I wrote this for my philosophy class. I thought it was nice, and so should you. This question is trying to trigger the realist vs anti-realist debate, so to begin, let’s define those two with help from Tennant’s Introducing Philosophy on p.28. Realism vs. Anti-Realism Realism: Scientific and mathematical truth exists independent of our perception of it. Everything in the mathematics and sciences is either a true or a false, regardless of what we currently, or ever will, know. If the Goldbach conjecture is true, there is a possibility we may never create a proof for it. This is the humble position to take, because the position admits the limited, fallible cognitive capacity of the human mind. This essentially opens the possibility for hard ‘epistemic agnosticism’ to exist. Hard agnosticism is the belief that the nature of God’s existence can never be known, so hard epistemic agnosticism is the belief that some truths can never be known. Note, realism is n...

Alek Minassian and Angry Virgins

Image
It goes without saying that Toronto’s 25-year-old Alek Minassian’s acts are a heinous crime that need to be punished (preferably capital punishment for the murder of 10 people!). To prevent further acts like these, one must examine the motives for carrying out such an attack and eliminating these sources of frustration. That is what this post seeks to do. Scary Virgins The final Facebook post prior to the Toronto attack of the attacker himself was the following. Let’s define a few terms: Incel means involuntary celibate (accidentally virgin); it is a social group like the alt-right. Chads refer to desirable men and Stacy’s refer to the pretty women that surround Chads. Elliot Rodger was a 22-year-old virgin with no social skills who went on a murder spree. Because society collectively made him agonizingly postpone sex for so long, as a means of retribution he kills a bunch of random people thereby collectively punishing society..? Scary Kid He Was Basi...
